Research is a large and very enjoyable part of my work. Take farm machinery for example. It’s not enough to have grown up on a farm! When I am translating a specification for a front loader, I need to understand about transmission systems, hydraulics, linkage and spool valves. To find the right term for the various attachments. To know the difference between a silage bucket, riddle bucket and beet bucket, a bale clamp, a bale fork and a tined grab. So I read about farm machinery, browse the Farmers Weekly, scrutinise the UK websites of machinery manufacturers, talk to farmers… it’s all part of the job.
I use memoQ translation software. This terminology management tool enables me to create customised translation memories and glossaries for each client, so you can rest assured, I speak your language!
